JOB SUMMARY:

Designs, installs and maintains irrigation systems for City sports fields and civic buildings, including the maintenance of all turf areas, playgrounds and amenities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Designs, installs, maintains, repairs and winterizes City garden/turf irrigation systems.
• Maintains City sports fields by marking field lines, edging and raking base paths
• Maintains parks facilities including litter, branches and garbage removal and repairing fencing
• Maintains civic lawns, gardens, sports fields, public beaches, walking trails by grass cutting, fertilizing, pest control and litter removal
• Participates in regular safety inspections on playground equipment in accordance with established standards and procedures; maintains and repairs as required
• Attends division safety talks, crew talks and required safety training; follows safe work procedures; reports hazards, injuries and near misses
• Uses hand tools to clear snow and ice from parking areas and pedestrian walkways and carries out sanding and salting; spreads urea on airport runway for ice control
• Operates various turf care equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, forklift and small hand and power tools
• Maintains parks turf equipment including changing oil, blades and belts
• Operates City vehicles (Class 5)
• Maintains professional and technical requirements for the position
• Performs related duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

• High School (Grade 12)
• 1 year certificate in Horticulture or Arboriculture
• Turfgrass Management Level 1
• Certified Irrigation Technician Level 1 & 2
• Certified Cross Connection Control (Backflow Prevention)
• Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License
• Landscape Integrated Pest Management Certificate
• W.H.M.I.S. Certificate
• Traffic Control Person Certificate
• CSA Playground Safety Certificate
• Class 22 Radio Telephone Operator’s Restricted Certificate
• Airside Vehicle Operator Permit (AVOP)
• Forklift Training
• Up to date knowledge of the City’s computerized systems, administrative systems and office technology as required

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

• 1 year experience in Landscape, Horticulture or Turfgrass Maintenance
• Or an equivalent combination of experience and education

PAY RATE:

This is a union position with the current 2018 pay rate of $29.64 per hour as outlined in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 798 Collective Agreement.

HOURS OF WORK:

7:30 – 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday, 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week
