JOB SUMMARY:

Provides journeyman mechanical maintenance and repair to City vehicles and equipment; performs welding and fabrication work

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Repairs and services vehicles and equipment, identifies problems using precision diagnostic instruments; removes, cleans, inspects, tests, repairs or replaces defective components using mechanical tools; reinstalls and performs necessary calibrations and adjustments, maintains notes and document repair history
  • Operates and tests repaired equipment and vehicles and makes necessary adjustments
  • Prepares new vehicles to user requirements; designs, customizes and installs electrical, electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic systems and other equipment,
  • Designs, organizes, plans and carries out preventative maintenance programs including the Commercial Vehicle Inspection program for vehicles and equipment
  • Performs minor auto body repairs such as repairing dents, scratches and paint touch up
  • Responds to on site service and emergency calls, reviews mechanical problems with operators, contacts dealers to discuss problems with vehicles and exchange technical advice
  • Repairs and services BC Transit Fleet and Fire and Emergency Services vehicles
  • Performs electric and oxy-acetylene welding and cutting and fabrication work; customizing blades, adding wheels on snow plows, building railings and gates
  • Attends division safety talks, crew talks and required safety training; follows safe work procedures; reports hazards, injuries and near misses
  • Operates City vehicles (Class 2 with Air or lesser)
  • Organizes, orders and maintains mechanical parts and supplies
  • Maintain professional and technical requirements for the position
  • Performs related duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School (Grade 12)
  • British Columbia Certificate of Qualification in Heavy Duty Mechanics or Automotive Mechanics
  • Valid B.C. Class 2 Driver’s License with Air Endorsement
  • B.C. Vehicle Inspectors Certificate
  • BC Transit Fleet Maintenance Workshop
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician Training
  • Forklift Training
  • W.H.M.I.S. Certificate
  • Up to date knowledge of the City’s computerized systems, administrative systems and office technology as required

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • 2 years experience as a Certified Mechanic
  • Or an equivalent combination of experience and education

PAY RATE:

This is a union position with the current 2018 pay rate of $35.86 per hour as outlined in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 798 Collective Agreement.

HOURS OF WORK:

7:00 am to 5:30 pm or 2:00 pm to midnight, Monday through Saturday, 10 hour day, 40 hours per week.
