JOB SUMMARY:

Supervises and participates in maintenance of City buildings and harbour and airport facilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organizes, schedules, coordinates, and inspects the work of section employees; sets day-to-day performance goals
  • Develops, implements and monitors timelines and budgets for projects; maintains daily activity records for the section
  • Participates in the maintenance of City buildings and harbour and airport infrastructure; supervises contractors such as carpenters, roofers, plumbers and electricians; installs and maintains building-related furniture and equipment; supervises janitorial services, monitors and regulates buildings and security systems including key control and inventory; maintains parking meters and street lights;
  • Orders materials and supplies; reviews invoices and purchase orders and recommends approval and payment
  • Attends division safety talks and conducts crew talks; ensures employees follow safe work procedures and have required safety training and equipment; conducts safety inspections of worksites and equipment and ensures corrective measures are taken
  • Maintains records of employee qualifications, trades qualifications and renewal of certificates and coordinates attendance at certification courses and trade certification courses
  • Provides information for the preparation of the annual budget and requests for proposals; prepares job cost estimates
  • Liaises with other departments, sections and contractors
  • Operates equipment including the forklift, personnel lift and hand and power tools
  • Operates City vehicles (Class 5)
  • Required to work outside of regular hours to deal with emergencies
  • May be required to fulfill standby responsibilities on a rotating schedule
  • Maintains professional and technical requirements for the position
  • Performs related duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School (Grade 12)
  • B.C. Certificate of Qualification in Carpentry
  • Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Pleasure Craft Operator’s Certificate
  • W.H.M.I.S. Certificate
  • RCMP Security Clearance
  • Fall Protection Training
  • Forklift Training
  • Personnel Lift Training
  • Parking Meter Maintenance Training
  • Up to date knowledge of the City’s computerized systems, administrative systems and office technology as required

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • 3 years experience working in a municipal building trades organization or equivalent including supervisory experience
  • Or an equivalent combination of experience and education

PAY RATE:

This is a union position with the current 2018 pay rate of $38.55 per hour as outlined in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 798 Collective Agreement.

HOURS OF WORK:

7:30 – 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week
