JOB SUMMARY:

Performs accounting functions related to period-end financial reporting the budget process. Provides support as needed to the Manager of Accounting Services and the Senior Accountant.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists with the preparation of the annual budget and prepares budget spreadsheets for upload into accounting software
  • Provides accurate information to internal and external agencies and the public
  • Liaises with City management regarding reporting needs and budget variance
  • Reconciles bank deposit, general ledger and subsidiary accounts
  • Responds to enquiries, provides information, ensures accuracy and resolves discrepancies regarding accounting functions
  • Prepares period-end functions including journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, working papers and lead sheets
  • Assists Senior Accountant, Senior Clerk – Payroll, Accounting Clerk – Payable and Accounting Clerk – Receivable
  • Relieves Accounting Clerk – Payable and Accounting Clerk – Receivable, Senior Clerk – Property Tax/Utilities positions in the absence of the incumbent
  • Provides support and training to users regarding financial and accounting system operations
  • Records earnings on investments
  • Attends division safety talks, crew talks and required safety training; follows safe work procedures; reports hazards, injuries and near misses
  • Maintains professional and technical requirements for the position
  • Performs related duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School (Grade 12)
  • W.H.M.I.S. Certificate
  • Intermediate spreadsheet course (MS Excel)
  • Diploma in Accounting or related field, or Post secondary education which satisfies Modules 1 (Introductory Financial Accounting), 2 (Introductory Management Accounting), 3 (Economics), 1 (Financial Accounting 1), 5.2 (Financial Accounting 2), 7 (Audit and Assurance), and 11 (Business Law) of the CPA PREP program
  • Up to date knowledge of the City’s Finance specific computer applications, administrative systems and office technology as required

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • 2 years of related experience
  • 6 months experience with an accounting software system (may be concurrent with above)
  • Or an equivalent combination of experience and education

PAY RATE:

This is a union position with the current 2018 pay rate of $31.81 per hour as outlined in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 798 Collective Agreement.

HOURS OF WORK:

8:30 – 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, up to 7 hours per day and up to 35 hours a week

Please note: This position is to provide support to cover for absences such as sick and vacation relief and requires availability for both short-notice and pre-scheduled short-term work.
