JOB SUMMARY:

Plans and undertakes new construction and renovation projects and provides maintenance and repairs to City facilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Inspects and analyzes plans for construction and renovation; works with the Building Inspector to ensure BC Building Code requirements are met, reads blueprints and draws sketches and plans of proposed work
  • Renovates structures by repairing and building walls, roofs, ceilings and doorways
  • Repairs and replaces flooring, furniture, windows, doors, locks and keys, and fixtures
  • Prepares and installs concrete formwork
  • Maintains and repairs floats, ramps and structures in the boat harbours; maintains and repairs airport buildings and infrastructure
  • Installs and repairs plumbing; maintains and troubleshoots air conditioners, heating units and programs thermostats; winterizes washrooms in unheated buildings; maintains parking meters and street lights
  • Prepares work areas and surfaces prior to painting; applies paint and other liquid coatings including fibreglass to furnishings, external and internal walls, ceilings, woodwork and floors; hangs wallpaper; installs fixtures
  • Performs electrical maintenance such as changing light bulbs and fluorescent tubes
  • Attends division safety talks, crew talks and required safety training; follows safe work procedures; reports hazards, injuries and near miss
  • Operates equipment including the forklift,personnel lift, ladders, scaffolding, spray-gun, high pressure washer and hand and power tools
  • Liaises with various contractors
  • Operates City vehicles (Class 5)
  • Orders materials and supplies
  • Maintain professional and technical requirements for the position
  • Performs related duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School (Grade 12)
  • B.C. Certificate of Qualification in Carpentry
  • Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Pleasure Craft Operator’s Certificate
  • W.H.M.I.S. Certificate
  • Traffic Control Person Certificate
  • R.C.M.P. Security Clearance
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1
  • Fall Protection Training
  • Forklift Training
  • Personnel Lift Training
  • Parking Meter Maintenance Training
  • Up to date knowledge of the City’s computerized systems, administrative systems and office technology as required

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • 2 years previous experience with all aspects of building construction, renovations and maintenance
  • Or an equivalent combination of experience and education

 PAY RATE:

This is a union position with the current 2019 pay rate of $35.20 per hour as outlined in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 798 Collective Agreement.

HOURS OF WORK:

7:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday to Friday, 8 hour day, 40 hour week
