JOB SUMMARY:

Delivers group fitness, weight training and rehabilitation programs

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plans and delivers group fitness classes according to industry standards and approved formats; demonstrates exercises, instructs patrons on effective workout methods and proper technique, observes participants and gives feedback, monitors participant safety and progress
  • Ensures a motivational learning environment using appropriate instructional methods and modifications, music selection and volume, and overall atmosphere
  • Ensures patrons adhere to the rules and regulations of the fitness facilities
  • Answers patron questions and solicits feedback; reports regularly to Supervisor
  • Sets up and takes down program equipment and ensures the room is left tidy and secure
  • Cleans equipment and verifies its safe working condition; reports any items needing repair to the Supervisor
  • Administers First Aid to Recreation Complex users when required
  • Attends crew safety talks and required safety training; follows safe work procedures; reports hazards, injuries and near misses
  • Maintains professional and technical requirements for the position
  • Performs related duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School (Grade 12)
  • Group Fitness OR Weight Training Certificate (or equivalent i.e. BCRPA, CanFItPro, ASCM, NSCA, CFES or ACE)
  • 10 Continuing Education Credits in a fitness specialty area (e. TRX, Zumba, etc)
  • Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certificate with CPR A
  • W.H.M.I.S. Certificate
  • A.E.D. Training
  • Current membership or eligibility for membership with a Provincial, National or International Fitness Industry Association (i.e. BCRPA, NCSA, CFES, ACE)
  • Up to date knowledge of the City’s computerized systems, administrative systems and office technology as required

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • 6 months experience as a group fitness instructor
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education

PAY RATE:

This is a union position with the pay rate of $26.43 per hour (2018) that will be adjusted according to the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 798 Collective Agreement (2019-2023).

HOURS OF WORK:

Varied schedule including evenings and most weekends
