JOB SUMMARY:

Organizes and delivers aquatic programs and/or special events ensuring the supervision and safety of participants.  Teaches swimming and lifesaving skills and performs light maintenance at the aquatic facility. Trains and recertifies Aquatics Staff.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensures that all participants adhere to the rules and regulations of the aquatic facility
  • Plans and delivers swimming lessons and lifesaving skills; demonstrates skills, observes participants and gives feedback, evaluates and reports on participant progress
  • Attends crew safety talks and required safety training; follows safe work procedures; reports hazards, injuries and near misses
  • Acts as a resource to Aquatic Staff I and II during public swimming sessions and special events
  • Instructs and re-certifies Aquatic Staff by conducting in-service training
  • Administers First Aid to Recreation Complex users when required
  • Maintains water chemistry by testing and regulating chemicals such as chlorine and soda ash
  • Monitors the pool filtration and water treatment equipment
  • Maintains equipment; checks and reports any items needing attention to the Supervisor
  • Performs light maintenance duties; hosing, mopping and glass cleaning
  • May relieve Reception staff as required
  • Maintains professional and technical requirements for the position
  • Performs related duties as assigned

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School (Grade 12)
  • Lifesaving Trainer – Swim Instructor Trainer OR NL Instructor Certificate
  • National Lifeguard Pool Certificate
  • Lifesaving Instructors Certificate
  • Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor Certificate
  • Pool Operator 1
  • W.H.M.I.S. Certificate
  •  Standard First Aid with OFA Level I Equivalent
  • Up to date knowledge of the City’s computerized systems, administrative systems and office technology as required
  • Ability to approach work and relationships in a culturally sensitive and inclusive manner.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • 1 year as Aquatic Staff II, concurrent with the experience requirements necessary for attaining Instructor certifications
  • Or an equivalent combination of experience and education

 

PAY RATE:

This is a union position with the current 2023 pay rate of $31.69 per hour as outlined in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 798 Collective Agreement.

 

HOURS OF WORK:

Varied schedule including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
