JOB SUMMARY:

Operates and maintains the Recreation Complex refrigeration, boiler, HVAC, and other related systems. Supports the Chief Engineer and provides backup coverage to the Chief Engineer during absences or heavy worlkload periods.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Installs, operates, maintains and repairs refrigeration and boiler equipment, aquatic systems, and HVAC systems. keeps maintenance records required by the Technical Safety BC
  • Programs and monitors the energy management system for the facility
  • Performs janitorial functions such as cleaning washrooms, upholstery, floors, and doors and windows; collects and removes garbage and recycling; replenishes cleaning supplies and dispenser articles
  • Performs building and pool maintenance including plumbing, light electrical and carpentry repairs, and filter and chlorine gas cylinder changes
  • Adheres to the Preventive Maintenance Program and documentation of related activities
  • Attends division safety talks and conducts crew talks and required safety training; ensures employees follow safe work procedures and have required safety training and equipment; conducts safety inspections of worksites and equipment and ensures corrective measures are taken; follows safe work procedures; reports hazards, injuries and near misses
  • Coordinates, prepares, paints and maintains ice surfaces using an ice re-surfacer and power ice edger
  • Provides information to the public and facility; ensures proper use of facilities and equipment
  • Supports the development and maintenance of a written emergency plan for staff and public; Ensures that proper emergency shut-down procedures are followed and directs the public in the event of a building evacuation; provides assistance to recreation users when injured
  • Liaises with other departments, sections and contractors
  • Operates cleaning and maintenance equipment and small hand and power tools
  • Operates City vehicles (Class 5)
  • Maintain professional and technical requirements for the position
  • Performs related duties as assigned

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School (Grade 12)
  • Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Arena Icemaker Certificate (or equivalent)
  • Power Engineer Class 4 Certificate
  • Personal Lift Training
  • Forklift Training
  • Building Services Worker 2
  • Pool Operator 1, 2 & 3
  • Chlorine Handling Certificate
  • Confined Space Entry Training
  • S.C.B.A. Training
  • A.E.D. Training
  • W.H.M.I.S. Certificate
  • Up to date knowledge of the City’s facility maintenance control systems, computer applications, administrative systems and office technology as required
  • Ability to approach work and relationships in a culturally sensitive and inclusive manner.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • 2 years related experience in the operation and maintenance of a Recreation Facility
  • 3 months previous experience with a computerized control system which may be concurrent with the above
  • Or an equivalent combination of experience and education

 

PAY RATE:

This is a union position with the current 2023 pay rate of $35.30 per hour as outlined in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 798 Collective Agreement. **Wage rate included in the posting is interim and is subject to review by the UJEC**

 

HOURS OF WORK:

Monday to Sunday, 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week. 24-hour continuous operation schedule
