2025 SUMMER DAY CAMP POSITIONS

**THIS IS NOT A CUPE JOB POSTING**

 

The City of Powell River is offering an extensive Summer Camp Program that caters to the recreational, social, and educational needs of the community. We seek dynamic, dedicated leaders for positions working with children aged 3-12 in a day camp setting. Responsibilities include organizing daily activities, planning age-appropriate crafts and games, supervising beach activities, ensuring program safety, and assisting with program marketing through school visits and community events. Strong organizational skills and teamwork are essential.

 

Successful applicants to positions that are funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program* must be 15 to 30 years of age at the start of their employment, but applicants of all ages are welcome to apply to this competition.

 

Current Emergency First Aid with CPR-C and AED certifications & Police Information Check is mandatory for all camp positions, while Bronze Cross or National Lifeguard Certification or a Class 4 Unrestricted Driver’s License may be eligible for a premium on the wage rate, to be determined.

 

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

Bronze Cross or National Lifeguard – Pool Option

High Five® Certification

Play It Fair! Certification

Babysitter Certification (e.g., Red Cross)

Class 4 Unrestricted Driver’s License

 

Summer Camp Coordinator (1 staff)          ($25.00 per hour)      40 hour week

  • Employment dates:                             June 16 –August 27, 2025 (11 weeks)

Must be at least 19 years old and hold a Class 4 Unrestricted Driver's License by the start of camp and may potentially earn a shift premium if also holding Bronze Cross or National Lifeguard Certification.

 

Summer Camp Leader (2 staff)                   ($22.50 per hour)      40 hour week

  • Employment dates:                             June 23 – August 27, 2025 (10 weeks)

  

Mini Camp Coordinator (2 staff)                 ($25.00 per hour)      20 hour week

  • Employment dates:                             June 23 – August 27, 2025 (10 weeks)

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Plan and implement engaging daily activities, games, and crafts for children aged 3 - 12 in a safe and inclusive environment.
  2. Supervise and ensure the well-being of campers during all activities, including outdoor play, field trips, and swimming.
  3. Foster positive relationships and promote teamwork among campers through effective communication and conflict resolution.
  4. Provide guidance and support to campers in their personal growth and development, encouraging independence and self-confidence.
  5. Enforce camp rules and safety protocols to maintain a secure and structured camp environment.
  6. Collaborate with fellow camp staff to coordinate schedules, resources, and logistics for daily operations.
  7. Assist in the setup, organization, and cleanup of camp facilities and equipment before, during, and after each session.
  8. Communicate regularly with camp management and parents/guardians regarding camper progress, concerns, and feedback.
  9. Act as a positive role model for campers by demonstrating enthusiasm, patience, and professionalism at all times.
  10. Participate in staff training sessions, meetings, and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge relevant to the role.
  11. Ability to approach work and relationships in a culturally sensitive and inclusive manner. 

 

Subsidies:

*Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) is a program under the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy, which aims to provide flexible and holistic services to help all young Canadians develop the skills and gain paid work experience to successfully transition into the labour market.

The CSJ program objectives align with the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy and are as follows:

  • provide quality work experiences for youth
  • respond to national and local priorities to improve access to the labour market for youth who face unique barriers
  • provide opportunities for youth to develop and improve their skills

 

The program provides wage subsidies to employers from not-for-profit organizations and the public sector, as well as private sector organizations with 50 or fewer full-time employees, to create quality summer work experiences for young people aged 15 to 30 years.
