JOB SUMMARY:

Performs janitorial and maintenance tasks related to the safe and efficient operation of the Recreation Complex

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs janitorial functions such as cleaning washrooms, upholstery, floors, doors, and windows
  • Collects and removes garbage and recycling from inside the Recreation Complex
  • Replenishes adequate cleaning supplies and dispenser articles
  • Sets up and takes down tables, chairs, and related equipment for program and special events
  • Performs building maintenance including plumbing, light electrical, and carpentry repairs
  • Performs pool maintenance; changes the filter at the soda ash pump and chlorine gas cylinders
  • Attends crew safety talks and required safety training; follows safe work procedures; reports hazards, injuries, and near misses
  • Provides information to the public and facility users; ensures proper use of facilities and equipment
  • Ensures that proper emergency shut-down procedures are followed and directs the public in the event of a building evacuation; provides assistance to recreation users when injured
  • Ensures all doors are properly locked at closing time to safeguard equipment and facility security
  • Prepares paints and maintains ice surfaces using an ice re-surfacer and power ice edger
  • Operates cleaning and maintenance equipment and small hand and power tools
  • Performs light maintenance on equipment; keeps maintenance records
  • Operates City vehicles (Class 5)
  • Maintains professional and technical requirements for the position
  • Performs related duties as assigned 

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • High School (Grade 12)
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Building Service Worker 1
  • Refrigeration Safety Awareness Certificate
  • WHMIS Certificate
  • AED Training
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the City’s computerized systems, administrative systems and office technology as required
  • Must acquire in the first year:
  • Confined Space Entry Training
  • SCBA Training
  • Chlorine Handling Training
  • Arena Icemaker Certificate
  • Pool Operator 1
  • Ability to approach work and relationships in a culturally sensitive and inclusive manner

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • 1 year related experience
  • Or an equivalent combination of experience and education

PAY RATE:

This is a union position with the current 2025 pay rate of $32.64 per hour as outlined in the CUPE Local 798 Collective Agreement.

HOURS OF WORK:

Monday through Sunday, 24-hour continuous operation schedule, up to 8 hours per day, up to 40 hours per week.

Please note: This position is to provide additional capacity and to cover for absences such as sick and vacation relief. It requires availability for both short-notice and pre-scheduled work for a varied schedule including daytime, evening, and weekend shifts
