JOB SUMMARY:

Develops, coordinates, markets and oversees delivery of community recreation, arena and other sport programs; supervises program employees and volunteers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assesses and evaluates the recreational sport needs and interests of the community; develops and implements programs to meet the needs of participants of all ages as well as special interest groups
  • Plans, coordinates, administers and oversees the delivery of community recreation, arena and sport recreation programs, league and facility events.
  • Develops and implements marketing programs to advertise and promote arena, sport, and community recreation programs and services.
  • Liaises with and provides technical and planning assistance to a variety of community organizations 
  • Liaises with local, provincial and federal sport associations and event organizers to maximize sport, recreation and physical literacy opportunities and foster a dynamic events community. 
  • Inventories and evaluates need for new equipment and program supplies and assists with acquisitions
  • Prepares proposals and assists the department in obtaining Federal, Provincial and or private funding for projects designed to meet the recreational needs of the community.
  • Reviews ongoing staffing and hiring needs with the Recreation Services Supervisor
  • Schedules, supervises and evaluates the performance of skate shop staff, program employees and volunteers.  Ensures required training is provided.
  • Administers contracts for program instructors and recreation services; Coordinates volunteer recruitment.
  • Liaises with other departments, sections and contractors to maintain facilities, fields and equipment
  • Attends division safety talks and conducts crew safety meetings; ensures employees follow safe work procedures and have required safety training and equipment; conducts safety inspections of worksites and equipment and ensures corrective measures are taken
  • Operates City vehicles (Class 4 or lesser)
  • Maintains professional and technical requirements for the position
  • Ability to approach work and relationships in a culturally sensitive and inclusive manner.
  • Performs related duties as required

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School (Grade 12)
  • Diploma in Recreation Administration, Physical Education or a related field
  • Valid B.C. Class 4 Driver’s License
  • W.H.M.I.S. Certificate
  • A.E.D. Training
  • Up to date knowledge of the City’s computerized systems, administrative systems and office technology as required

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • 2 years of programming experience
  • 2 years experience managing or supervising adult or youth sports leagues or associations, which may be concurrent with the above
  • Or an equivalent combination of experience and education

PAY RATE:

This is a union position with the current pay rate of $39.29 per hour as outlined in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 798 Collective Agreement.

HOURS OF WORK:

6:00 am to Midnight, Monday through Sunday, 7 hour day – 35 hour week. 

(This position requires some availability outside regular working hours to support events and programs.)
