If you would answer YES to any of the following be advised that your application will not be accepted.

  • Do not possess a valid British Columbia driver’s license;
  • More than 9 points on your current drivers’ abstract;
  • Drivers’ license currently under suspension;
  • Do not own a licensed or insured vehicle;
  • Have any debilitating medical conditions / physical assessment will be required;
  • Have commitments that will interfere with basic training program (Wednesday evenings 18:30 to 21:30 for 6 months) or with regular ongoing Tuesday evening training sessions (1900 – 2100);
  • Have a fear of heights;
  • Have a fear of confined spaces;
  • Have claustrophobia;
  • Unable to meet NFPA 1582 vision standards

 INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS:

On the job requirements include, but are not necessarily restricted to, the following:

  1. Participation in a 6-month basic training program. Upon successful completion of the Recruit Training Program, the recruit will be assigned to an appropriate Fire Station No. 1 Westview or No. 2 Wildwood to complete the requirements of the B.C. Exterior Playbook Standards recognized by the Office of the Fire Commissioner. 
  2. Attendance at a minimum of 70% of training sessions, usually Tuesday nights from 1900 to 2100 hours (after basic training).
  3. Participation in the B.C. Firefighter Full-Service Certification Program. Be prepared to participate in all aspects of training, which includes lectures, practical or “hands on training” indoors and outdoors regardless of weather conditions. This training covers all basic fire fighting and emergency topics, including Fire Service Orientation, Hose, Ladders, Self Contained Breathing Apparatus, Rescue and Safety, Hazardous Chemicals and Dangerous Goods.
  4. Ability to respond to incidents (may occur anytime-day or night, anytime during the year). When involved in any Fire Rescue operation you are expected to conduct yourself in a sensible and professional manner. 
  5. Successful completion of a one-year probationary period. 

Due to Work Safe BC regulations the wearing of beards or excessive facial hair is not permitted due to the necessity to wear breathing apparatus.

YOU WILL BE SUPPLIED WITH:

  1. Full protective clothing (known as turn-out gear).
  2. A pager for call-outs to fire incidents.
  3. Benefit Insurance – Accident and Sickness Program – 24-hour coverage.
  4. Physical Fitness pass at the Recreation Complex upon completion of Exterior Firefighter Program.

 REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Permanent resident of the City of Powell River (residents of the Regional District will be evaluated on a case by case basis)
  • Minimum age of 19
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Completed Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Normal vision subject to firefighter eye and vision standards
  • Normal hearing with no artificial aids
  • Police information computer check with vulnerable sector screening (criminal record check) to be completed before final acceptance as an Auxiliary Firefighter
  • Valid current BC Driver’s License with less than 9 points – attach a copy of the driver’s license abstract obtained from the local Driver’s Service Centre
  • Possess good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Ability to swim
  • Transportation to respond to calls.
  • A medical from the Fire Rescue Physician indicating that you are physically fit to perform duties of a firefighter. Cost will be borne by Powell River Fire Rescue.
  • Fire Services fitness test conducted by Powell River Fire Rescue

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Employed in the Powell River area – ability to leave work for fire calls
  • Ability to respond to day-time incidents (weekdays).

 PAY RATE:

The current 2021 pay rate is $15.20/hour for training. The current 2021 pay rate is $15.20 - $22.00/hour for incident responses (rate based upon experience, two hours minimum).
