JOB SUMMARY:
This is a skilled position entailing firefighting, rescue and other related emergency services
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responds to emergency calls, lays and connects hoses, holds nozzles and directs water streams, raises and climbs ladders, uses extinguishers and other equipment
- Provides rescue in various form including; first responder; hazmat; high- angle rescue and extrication
- Removes persons from danger and administers first aid to injured persons
- Ventilates buildings to release heat, smoke and gases and places salvage covers to prevent water damage
- Attends division safety talks, crew talks and required safety training; follows safe work procedures; reports hazards, injuries and near misses
- Operates firefighting equipment and apparatus as assigned
- Performs varied maintenance tasks on equipment, apparatus and facilities
- Participates in fire prevention work and inspections
- Performs clerical duties as required including compiling reports and data entry
- Maintains professional and technical requirements for the position
- Performs related duties as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School (Grade 12) or equivalent
- Valid B.C. Class 3 Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement
- Certificate of Completion of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Levels 1 and 2 from an accredited firefighter training program approved by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) Board or PRO-Board
- Valid First Responder Licence or BC Provincial Emergency Medical Assistant Licence
- Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Certificate
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
- 2 years response and firefighter training
PAY RATE:
This is a full-time union position with a current starting pay rate of $33.30 per hour for the first 6 months or commensurate to work experience as outlined in Schedule ‘A’ of the Powell River Professional Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 1298 Collective Agreement.
HOURS OF WORK:
This position is required to work shift work and must be available for 10-hour day-time shifts and/or 14 hour night-time shifts. The successful applicant will initially be assigned to Flex Firefighter scheduling as per the Powell River Professional Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 1298 Collective Agreement.
