The Powell River Fire Department is seeking to establish an Eligibility List of qualified candidates to fill temporary and permanent vacancies that are anticipated to occur over the next two to three years.  All current Auxiliary Firefighters are eligible to apply and their application should indicate their interest in either temporary full-time positions or permanent full-time positions.

 

JOB SUMMARY:

This is a skilled position entailing firefighting, rescue and other related emergency and non services.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reports to the Fire Captain.
  • Responds to reported calls for emergency situations including but not limited to Fires, Medical, Technical Rescue, Hazardous Materials, Water and Marine Rescue, Motor Vehicle Incidents.
  • Lays and connects hoses, holds nozzles and directs water streams, raises and climbs ladders, uses extinguishers and other Fire Department equipment.
  • Involves rescue of Firefighters and members of the public and must be able to carry or drag people to safety without the assistance from others and wearing 60 pounds of protective gear.
  • Ventilates buildings using multiple techniques to release heat, smoke and gases and protects property to prevent water and/or smoke damage.
  • Participates in crew and department safety talks and required safety training; follows safe work procedures; reports hazards, injuries and near misses.
  • Operates all firefighting equipment and apparatus as assigned.
  • Performs varied maintenance tasks on equipment, apparatus and facilities.
  • Participates in fire prevention work and inspections.
  • Performs janitorial duties as required including cleaning washrooms and kitchens, mopping and vacuuming.
  • Maintains professional look and appearance and keeps up to date with the technical requirements for the job as firefighter.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School (Grade 12) or equivalent
  • Valid B.C. Class 3 Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement
  • Pro Board or IFSAC certification to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Levels 1 and 2
  • Valid First Responder Licence or BC Provincial Emergency Medical Assistant Licence or higher.
  • Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Certificate current within 1 year.
  • Ability to approach work and relationships in a culturally sensitive and inclusive manner.

 

REQUIRED  EXPERIENCE:
2 years response and firefighter training.
